still waiting.

waiting2
waiting
the other day we waited
for the soft sounds of the ice cream truck
to trickle down our street.
when we heard that magical sound
we raced throughout our house,
shaking our piggy banks and gathering change.
we ran down wooden stairs,
feet slapping the floor so hard we left footprints behind.
those bare feet carried us over the dewy lawn
branches dusted our hair with leftover rain.
the water felt warm against my skin.
in a matter seconds we missed our moment.
we ran into emptiness.
a view of a park with welcoming arms open wide,
but no ice cream truck.
and so we waited.
we sat in the moist grass
waiting in silence
for a truck that never came.

*as a sidenote, what happened to the days when you could run to the ice cream truck with a dollar and purchase anything your heart desired? these days it takes ten dollars to buy something for all three kids. maybe it's a good thing we missed the truck, i don't know that i can continue to afford this! but, the kids have been doing extra chores around the house to contribute to our ice cream jar, which we keep by the front door.

*since the truck never came i took everyone to starbucks. we spent more than ten dollars.

  2. that is very sad but kind of funny. we never have an icecream truck.. recently, on a day it was 101 degrees my husband and I did yardwork for 9 hours. we finally decided to take a water break and went inside to cool off... a mirage-like icecream truck flew past our house for that split second we were inside...we were devastated so I know exactly what you mean!

  3. Oh so sad! But these pictures are sweet. And what a good mama for treating everyone anyway! (We never know when the ice cream truck is coming either.)
